PREMIER LEAGUE RESULTS

TEAM NELSON BAYS RETAIN PREMIER TROPHY

Team Nelson Bays took out the Premier League Squash title after the fourth round against Team Marlborough at the Nelson Squash Club on Thursday evening.

The competition has been close all the way and Nelson Bays came into the final round just ahead of Marlborough by 4 points, and still needing to win at least 2 ties out of 4 to win overall.

Marlborough came out firing and nearly turned the tables on Nelson after defeating  Fitness Zone and Waimea Sawmillers  but the

The NBS team dominated Marlborough 4 to win every match and earn 2 points back for Team Nelson.  Christine Castle (NBS) had a gritty battle against Adele Cuthill, winning 15/13 in the 5th set, while Tristan Palmer made short work of John Van Velzen winning 3/0. Mark Kerr defeated Megan Craig in 5, and Ashley Stevens also slogged it out against Simon Bamford to win 15/13 in the 5th set.

The Tasman Bay team took out a comfortable 3/1 over their Marlborough opponents to seal the win for Team Nelson,  Josh King, playing for Tasman Bay stepped up the pace and comfortably dispatched Paul Roughan 3/1, and Andrew Gaging and Paaka Westrupp also had good 3/1 wins over their opponents Parvel Merta and Mickayla Kerr.

The Premier league served as a good warmup for many of the players who were competing in the Marlborough Open at the weekend, and for Winter Interclub which commences after Easter.

Premier Squash League - Round 2 Results

Team Nelson Bays gained the advantage in the Premier Squash League at Club Waimea after Round 2  winning 3 ties to Marlborough's one,  and last week they travelled over the hills again hoping to consolidate the lead.  However Nelson Bays were disadvantaged by being two players short in the Waimea Sawmillers team.  Team mates Reece O'Connell and Christine Palmer couldnt match the experience of Mikayla Kerr and Julia Craig, losing both matches in 3 which resulted in a 4-0 loss for Waimea Sawmillers.

Josh King, playing for Nelsons Tasman Bay Wines had a good run with former Marlborough team mate, Grant Craig winning 3/1.  Brendon Monk  dropped the first game against Pavel Merta 14/15 , but quickly found his stride to dominate and won the next three comfortably.   Paaka Westrupp worked hard to win the third match against Pete Buscke 3/1 to pick up a good 3-1 win for the Tasman Bay Wines team.

Tristan Palmer looked sharp and wasted no time dispatching Marlborough stalwart Pete Heagney 3/0 for the Nelson Building society team .  Mark Kerr had a battle on his hands against Peter Flyn, going to 5 sets but Flynn had done his dash after 4 sets and Kerr took the last set comfortably 15/6.  Christine Castle also had to work hard all the way against Dorothy Boyce of Marlborough.  Castle dug deep to come back from 2-1 down after narrowly losing the third game 15/17  and won the fifth set 15/13 and giving the NBS team a 3-1 win.

The Fitness Zone team won 2 out of 4 matches in their tie against Marlborough 4.  Marcus Rose got one back for the Team Nelson boys this week,  defeating rising NZ junior representative Megan Craig.  Craig retrieved well, but Rose kept the pressure on with deadly drops and boasts from the back of the court to win the match 3/1.  Susan O'Connell had a close 3/2 win for Fitness Zone over Adele Cuthill whose lob serves and volleys kept the pressure on O'Connell for the whole match.

At 2-2, the tie went to games countback, with Marlborough winning 8-7  and taking the 2 points for Team Marlborough.

Round 3 was very close.  Drawing 2-2 on ties and 8-8  on match countback Marlborough squeaked in to win Round 3 on games countback 34-27.  However, as every tie won by a team earns 2 points for their region,  Team Nelson are still just ahead of Team Marlborough by 14 points to 10 .  Team Nelson  will need to win at least 2 ties next week in the final round to ensure the overall win.   The last round will be played at Nelson Squash club on Thursday 25 March at 7.00pm.  Spectators are welcome.

Premier Squash League - Round 1 results

Marlborough has the edge after Round 1

The first round of the Premier League kicked off on Thursday evening with Team Marlborough enjoying the home advantage at the Anchor Stadium.   Warmer than usual court temperatures made for long rallies and tested the fitness of several Nelson players.  While the score was drawn at two ties each, Marlborough had the edge and finished the first round ahead of Nelson on countback by 10 matches to 6.   As expected the Marlborough number one players were very strong and dominated all their  matches against Nelson.

Megan Craig, playing in the mens division, dropped the first game against Nelson's Scott Gibbons but quickly found her stride  to keep Gibbons under pressure and took the next three games and the match 3/1 .  Mark Kerr started well and was disappointed to lose to Grant Craig in 5 after 4 close games, but as always, Craig managed to dig a little deeper and dominated the last game to defeat Kerr 15/2.  Marcus Rose started well against Paul Roughan taking the first game but struggled to keep up the pace and dropped the next 3 to lose 1/3.

Tristan Palmer (Nelson) got off to a flying start defeating Richard Aitken 3/0 as did Michael Hughes against Russell Lindsay. Brendon Monk had a torrid battle with Peter Heagney in the heat winning 3/2 for Nelson.  Reece O'Connell made his debut for Nelson with a confident win against Simon Bamford 3/0.  Barry Roberts had a huge  battle with Mickayla Kerr (Malrborough) and dominated for most of the match.  However Kerr made a gritty comeback in the 5th and Roberts couldnt match her fitness for the last few rallies going down 17-14.   Christine Castle and Susan O'Connell both picked up good wins against Janet Udy and Julia Craig.  Jodie Rutherford was unlucky to lose 3/2 to Dorothy Boyce, a new player to the region.
