2010 HEAPHY SHIELD RESULTS

Nelson Bays Squash has reclaimed the Heaphy Shield for 2010 after defeating West Coast and Marlborough in Greymouth at the weekend.  The  Heaphy Shield is the regions' premier squash tournament where each regions’ top four men and women play four matches each  over the weekend.  Nelson has dominated the event in past years with four consecutive wins since 2005, but reluctantly surrendered the Shield last year to a very strong Marlborough team.   This year a full strength womens team won  14 out of 16 matches for the Nelson Bays team during the weekend, which took the pressure off the men who faced particularly strong competition from Marlborough.  The men picked up the other 8 matches to take the total of Nelson Bays wins to 22.  West Coast helped out by winning 8 matches overall, picking up some good wins against  Marlborough  who won 18 matches.

Player/coach Nick Wiffen got the team off to a great start by defeating arch rival Grant Craig from Marlborough  3/1 in the first match of the competition on Friday night.  Wiffen went on to win 3 out of 4 of his matches, losing only to Josh King , (who still holds a  Marlborough grading even though he is living in Nelson.)  Mark Kerr at number 2 for Nelson Bays pushed his opponents hard and was unlucky to lose 2/3 to Grant Craig after an epic battle.  Kerr picked up a good 3/0 win against Ian Pattinson (West Coast). Tristan Palmer picked up 2 useful wins out of 4 for the team during the weekend against Jimmy Campbell (West Coast) and Kevin Stevenson (West coast) and  did well to push  A grader Paul Roughan  to 5 sets on Saturday morning.

New cap Brendon Monk made a memorable debut for the Heaphy Team, also defeating Campbell and Stevenson.  But  it was his match against Peter Flynn (Marlborough) that will be unforgettable for a while.  Monk was up 2/1 during last match of the tournament on Sunday and running Flynn ragged in the 4th when his archilles tendon  ruptured during a massive rally,  leaving both players sprawled out on the floor and Monk out of action for at least 6 months.

Katrina Palmer made the journey over from Christchurch where she is studying to take the number 1 spot for the Nelson Bays womens team and comfortably won 3 out of 4 matches.  Ironically the match she lost to A graded Erin Dippie (West Coast) was probably the best match of the womens competition to watch.  The match was fast and furious with both players retrieving the ball  from every corner of the court.  Palmer won the first game and was unlucky to lose the second match 15/13 but Dippie's superior fitness gave her the edge to keep retrieving and Dippie won 3/1.    Maree Smith made a confident comeback to representative squash after having a few years off with injuries.  Smith had 3  good wins out of 4 matches , losing only to to Dippie.  Susan O'Connell  at number 3 also made a return to Heaphy  shield after a few years break due to injuries and Christine Castle was very storng in the number 4 spot ,with  both players bringing a lot of experience to the bottom order.  O'Connell and Castle dominated, each winning 4 out of 4 matches.

Tamsyn Leevy presents Motueka's Nick Wiffen with the 2009 trophy for Premier League

Team Nelson takes squash title for fourth time:

Team Nelson have  won the Premier Squash League for the 4th time since the competition started in 2005 after winning round four at Nelson Squash Club on Thursday evening.   Every round is worth a potential of 16 match points and after two rounds Team Nelson were sitting comfortably on 23 matches to 9.  Marlborough won the third round 9 matches to 7 which gave Nelson a hurry up, but it was all too late for Marlborough in the final round, who only managed to win 7 matches to Nelson's 9 giving Team Nelson the overall win 39 matches to 25.

Number 2 player Brendon Monk completed the series undefeated, after beating Phil Kilgour 3-0 and Dean Rush picked up a useful 3/0 win over Richard Aitken.   John van Velzen of Marlborough was fired up to cause an upset and he did,  defeating Tristan Palmer in 5.   Pavel Merta's ability to run and retrieve forerver upset Nelson's Michael Hughes who played well, but ran out of legs and ideas, losing 3-1.  Andrew Gaging stepped up as reserve  for Team Nelson and picked up a handy 3/1 win against Pete Flynn while Team Captain Nick Wiffen fired up to play his arch rival Grant Craig from Marlborough.  Wiffen dominated the match from the onset with attacking squash and Craig couldnt find any answers to it, losing to Wiffen 3-0.    Team Nelson's Chris Castle continues her good form beating Nic Dann 3-0 .  Jodie Rutherford was too fit and fast for Marlborough's Julie Gardiner and defeated her 3-1. Marlborough's two A grade women, Mikayla Kerr and Megan Craig are in a league of their own not dropping a game, and barely any points in the whole series.

While this series is always competitive between the two regions, it also serves the purpose of providing much needed match play for higher graded players as the competitive season kicks off , and was a good warm up for the Marlborough Open tournament which was played at the weekend.
