SUPER SQUASH EXHIBITION

Nelson Squash Club hosted the inaugural Super Squash exhibition at the weekend with three of the biggest names in New Zealand squash showcasing their expertise. Evan Williams, Tamsyn Leevy, and Nick Mita of Squash Wellington blew the audience away with an exciting demonstration of expert precision and pace on the centre court. The evening was set to paint a picture of the high performance levels between our districts champions, and those of the national and international circuit.

The first line up pitted Nelson’s Mark Kerr (A2) against Williams (A1) in a singles match of three sets, both players were repeatedly pushed around the court from dominance to defence and when given the opportunity managed to bring out magnificent shots from all over. Although Kerr kept retrieving time and again, Williams showed his clinical skill in killing the ball when the rallies presented him with a loose shot. William’s took the match comfortably 15/8, 15/12.

Tamsyn Leevy (A1, former World Doubles Champ and Silver Medallist) came up against Nelson’s (Prince) Brendon Monk (B1). Monk got off to a great start making his opponent play hard out of the back court and spend much of the first game retrieving, however; as the game progressed Leevy displayed the dogmatic precision of a world champ and kept the ball tight even under pressure reducing opportunities for Monk to move forward. Leevy squeezed out the Prince in two sets 15/14, 15/13.

In the doubles exhibition Mita and Leevy teamed up against Williams and local Celtic doubles player Tristan Pamler (B1). The close combat with four players on the standard court made for an interesting display of dodging, while outright power gave way to racket skill and tight angles. The match ended at a stalemate with Mita and Leevy taking the first set 15/10, and the Williams and Palmer duo taking the second 16/15.

In a follow up interview Leevy said “I’ve had a great first serious season back after my second child coming 3rd at nationals and making the NZ doubles team, I’m setting my sights on Delhi for the Commonwealth Doubles, and the World Women’s teams event at Palmerston North in December 2010”.

Williams (at 19 years of age) has had a busy season and now holds a PSA ranking of 256 in the world. Following 4 months off with an ankle injury he made it to the semi’s of one PSA event and has frequented Australia for high level competition and prestigious events. “I’m looking forward to another focused season next year and I’ve lined up 10 PSA events on the tournament calendar” – Williams.

The Super Squash evening wound up with the local prize giving acknowledging the accomplishments of all facets of squash in Nelson Bays. The MVP senior awards went to Sue Netto of Takaka, and Mark Kerr of Nelson for their sterling performances against Marlborough during the season. The Volunteer of the year award was presented to Steve Petrie of Nelson Squash Club. In the junior ranks Waimea’s Sophie O’Connell took out the trophy for 2009 most improved player, while Sam Church of Celtic Squash won the award for positive commitment and attitude to squash.
