Congratulations to the interclub champions! NELSON BAYS SQUASH INTERCLUB FINALS Final accolades split in series final
Nelson Squash Club laid host to some fantastic squash played across all divisions on Wednesday with amazing rallies and die hard play right to the end. The prizes were split across the board with Nelson taking out the Men’s top division, Waimea took control of the men’s second division beating Celtic, Takaka beat Nelson in the third division, and the Ladies division was taken out by TNL International Celtic.
Men’s Div One Final: Nelson 1 v Waimea 2. Waimea’s Sean O’Connell beat Scott Brookland 3-1, O’Connell’s consistent play and control of the match from the centre of the court kept Brookland on the back foot throughout the match. Nelson’s Steve Molnar dispatched Brendon Whitley in five sets, this was a real up and down match with both players battling hard right to the end, Molnar eventually stacked several one hit wonders to edge Whitley out in the fifth set. Richard Stephenson was Nelson’s mid season replacement after team captain Richard Harden was injured early in the round, Stephenson had little trouble in ending Steve MacIntosh’s final’s hopes taking the match out 3-0 for the Nelson side. Team captain Mark Kerr once again led his Nelson lads with solid squash and strength on the court. Kerr’s dogmatic play in retrieving even the most challenging ball from the corners was too much for Waimea top seed Marcus Rose; going down 3-1.
Men’s Div Two Final: Celtic 1 v Waimea 1. Sam Church the unbeaten junior from Celtic made light work of Waimea’s Reece O’Connell; taking out the match in straight sets, O’Connell said “I played my heart out but I just wasn’t there on the day”. Steve Wallace of Waimea was the terrier on the heels of Bruce Palmer throughout the top seeds match, Palmer showed tremendous skill and experience moving Wallace around the court with clinical precision, yet the change of direction and variation in shots wasn’t enough to shake Wallace who took out the match in the fifth set from match point down. Mark Gale of Waimea met Brian Hearfield in the third round of the evening, Gale had little trouble in finding his way around Hearfield with a secure 3-0 win. Celtic’s Al Church succumbed to Waimea junior Chris Collins in 3 straight sets, the young up and comer has really come into his own this season gaining valuable experience from senior players whilst building his own techniques and strengthening with the Nelson Building Society junior squads.
Men’s Div Three Final: Takaka 1 v Nelson 1. Steve Petrie of Nelson 1 defeated Takaka’s Steve Hambrook at the top seed position 3-1, Petrie had a few unsettled moments as Hambrook came out firing in sporadic occasions, however Petrie regained control and finished in four sets. Chris McCarthy Nelson’s team captain set to David Hurst of Takaka with a power game keeping the ball hot and in the back court for most of the match, both players showed good mid-court control utilising full stretch volleys and deadly short kills. Despite the high quality of play from both sides, McCarthy showed Hurst the door 3-1 and set the pace for the matches to follow. Chris Moyle of Takaka managed to hold off the barrage of mid-court kills from Eddie “The Hammer” Westrupp, as play reached the fourth set, Westrupp was on a roll keeping Moyle just out of reach of the ball, but; before letting Nelson sneak away with the fourth set, Moyle launched a flurry of serves beyond Westrupp’s grasp to finish the battle 3-1.
Women’s Final: TNL International’s Celtic v Waimea 3. Leading the charge for the Celtic ladies, Jodie Rutherford made short work of Kate Swanson winning in straight sets. Rutherford maintained textbook squash across the board with strength keeping the ball in the back court, and variation to pose a consistent challenge to Swanson. Corinne Coulthard captain for the Waimea ladies kept Helen Palmer in the back court for the majority of the match, Palmer unable to move forward was at the receiving end of consistent volleying and power plays from Coulthard who kept the T under tight control, the match ended up a 3-1 victory for the Waimea side with Palmer taking out a close set earlier in the game. One of the classic match ups of the finals was Waimea’s Wendy Holmes meeting regular rival Aimee McHardy at fourth seed, the pair showed good variation with boast nicks and drop shot rallies scattered throughout the match but McHardy managed to take control long enough to edge out Holmes 3-1 in the fourth. Glenda Buschl of Waimea dispatched Linda Widdowson in four sets. Widdowson maintained good length on her drives but couldn’t overcome Buschl’s deceiving mix of long and short plays.
