Celtic and Takaka represent at finals

A strong competitive season by players from Celtic and Takaka squash clubs brought four of the smaller teams to the finals event at Nelson Squash Club.

Celtic’s premier men’s team won the top division with Ashley Stevens beating Steve Molnar 3-1, and Sam Church beating Andy Gourdie 3-1. Scott Gibbons was called up following Brendon Monk’s torn Achilles earlier in the season, Gibbons being a bit rusty didn’t appear to trouble Celtic top seed Tristan Palmer who tidied up a 3-0 win. Celtic’s Colin Millar was unable to get around Scott Brookland, the Nelson second seed did well to outplay Millar with both players being similar in grading.

In the second division, Celtic’s team led by Bruce Palmer were unfortunate not to secure a match win with a 4-0 defeat to points leaders Nelson 1.

Palmer went down 3-0 to Nelson’s top seeded Paaka Westrupp. With a difference of only 3 points in the first two games Palmer couldn’t quite get on top of Westrupp’s high speed drives. The injury of Alistair Ashcroft brought in 4th seed replacement Richard Harland to put up one of the evenings best matches. Harland came up against Celtic’s Alan Church and at 2-1 down Harland rolled his ankle allowing Church to dominate play with a strong variation of depth and pace. In the fourth set Harland fought back in spectacular fashion securing the match 3-2 for Nelson bringing the match tally 2-0 in Nelson’s favour. Third line up brought Matt Smith of Celtic against Tom Molnar. Molnar’s strong growth over the season brought some fantastic shots to keep Smith on his toes. The match saw many “Let” calls in dubious circumstances which kept referee Harland under pressure, but in the end Molnar squeezed Smith out in five sets (15/13, 13/15, 11/15, 15/11, 15/13).

Fourth match of the evening was a dead rubber between Nelson’s Greg Walsh and Celtic’s Scott Dodd. Walsh comfortably kept Dodd on a short lead with strong change up between shots and pace allowing him to control the middle of the court throughout the game. “Scott really brought his A game in the first set with strong volleys and tight drives, although I was under pressure I felt in control of the match” Greg Walsh

The third division brought out-of-towner’s Motueka and Takaka against each other to tie up the interclub season. Takaka’s Jono Davies took out top seed Callum Seymour 3-0. Josh Broderick of Motueka beat Alex Hicks 3-1, and Greg Knapp of Takaka beat Paul Harrison of Motueka 3-0. Motueka’s Geoff Seymour beat Garry Balck of Takaka 3-2 in a tight fought match, unfortunately it wasn’t enough to stop Takaka taking the win in a count-back on games.

Both women’s teams making the final had their work cut out for them and it was always going to be close. Defending champions Celtic 1 took on Waimea 1 for the evening, top seeds Jodie Rutherford and Susan O’Connell had a good battle on court, Rutherford pulled together a great game but O’Connell was too strong and kept game ball beyond Rutherford’s grasp. Waimea’s Tanya MacDonald came up against Ammie McHardy; McHardy (who has improved significantly over the season) handed a 3-0 defeat to MacDonald. Second seeded Celt Cheryl Heta was pushed to the limit against Waimea’s Sophie O’Connell. O’Connell led 2-0 before Heta fought back to a 2-2 fifth set; Heta was unable to convert the swift comeback to a victory with O’Connell sealing the deal in 5 sets. In the ladies fourth seed match up Celtic’s Jess Hildyard beat Waimea’s Sara-Linda MacMillan in straight sets.
